South Africa is at risk of governance failure. So said Terrance Booysen, CEO of the CGF Research Institute, speaking at the ITWeb Governance, Risk and Compliance 2015 Summit in Johannesburg this week.

Citing the CGF Research Institute's SA Annual Integrated Report of 2014/2015, Booysen listed political instability, power crises; corruption in government, inadequate and poorly located infrastructure, ailing public health system, failing public service, and overly prescriptive regulation as some issues threatening governance in the country.

Today we are living in a world full of uncertainties, making governance, risk and compliance (GRC) critical for survival.

So said French Caldwell, chief evangelist at GRC solutions provider MetricStream, in a keynote address at the ITWeb GRC Summit 2015 held at the Forum in Bryanston yesterday.

He likened the uncertainties businesses face today to a road trip. "When driving a car on a road trip, you will never be certain if you will make it from point A to B because of a number of factors," said Caldwell.

SA to criminalise data hoarding

With the imminent promulgation of the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act, data hoarding will become illegal in SA.

So said Michiel Jonker, director of IT advisory at Grant Thornton, addressing the Governance, Risk and Compliance Summit 2015 held at The Forum in Bryanston yesterday.

According to Jonker, data hoarding is the gathering of data without a clear business reason or security strategy to protect the underlying information.

Need for tech-savvy board of directors

In most organisations, members of the board of directors do not realise the significance of technology as a critical business driver.

That's the view of Winston Hayden, independent trusted advisor, and director and past president of ISACA SA, who presented yesterday at the ITWeb Governance, Risk and Compliance Summit 2015, held at The Forum, Bryanston.

According to Hayden, the average age of a board member is 62 years, and technology is not an area of expertise a lot of them.

Governance, risk and compliance (GRC) has come of age, and it's time organisations start making sense of it.

These were the words of Michael Rasmussen, chief GRC pundit at GRC 20/20 Research, in a keynote address at the ITWeb GRC Summit 2015 at The Forum, Bryanston, this morning.

According to Rasmussen, every organisation has some sort of GRC approach to avoid anarchy. However, he said, companies need better approaches to GRC because "we are living in a highly risky world".
