Anriette Esterhuysen

Anriette Esterhuysen is the executive director of the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), an international network established in 1990, of organisations working with ICTs to support social justice and development. She oversees initiatives in nearly 40 countries aimed at improving the flow of information to and among ordinary citizens.

Prior to joining APC Anriette was executive director of APC member SANGONeT, and served on the steering committee of ISPA, the South African Internet Service Provider's Association.

Esterhuysen has been fighting injustice for most of her life. Her most effective weapons are information and communications technology and she has pioneered the use of ICT for the upliftment of impoverished, oppressed and marginalised people in SA and throughout the world.

APC's current work in South Africa is focused on promoting affordable internet access through advocating for dynamic approaches to frequency regulation, e.g. to allow the use of Television White Spaces for wireless broadband, and to protect the free flow of information on the internet.

Esterhuysen frequently visits APC members and projects around the world, liaises with government and development agencies and addresses international conferences about the use of technology to alleviate poverty and injustice. Through her work locally and internationally, she has garnered a reputation for being smart, energetic and not afraid to tackle tough issues.
