Giovanni Chiarelli, Chief technology and information officer, MTN South Africa

Giovanni Chiarelli is chief technology and information officer at MTN SA. He has served in this role since November 2016. Chiarelli is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the field of IT, gleaned from a number of multinational corporations, including UniCredit, Accenture, Telecom Italia and Vodafone Group.

Chiarelli is responsible for shaping and driving technology and information strategies for MTN SA.

Before he joined MTN SA, Chiarelli was the CTO of Vodafone Romania, and before then he served as the global IT programme director for Vodafone Group.

Chiarelli holds an electrical engineering degree from Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy and a master’s in business administration from Universita’ Luigi Bocconi, Milan, Italy. In 2009, Oracle Corporation awarded him ‘CIO of the Year for the EMEA Region’.
