Hettie Booysen, head: operational risk, IT Risk Standard Bank
Dr Hettie Booysen is a visionary, strategic and delivery-focused executive with more than 20 years' experience in information security and information security risk management. She is an expert in establishing functions and teams to execute information security programmes within the government, finance and communications sectors. She has a proven track record of empowering people through leadership and exceeding delivery on objectives.

She started her career at Telkom SA having responsibility for risk assessments and disaster recovery planning, before becoming the senior manager of the Corporate Information Security Group. She was then head hunted to start the Information Security Risk Management division at the South African Receiver of Revenue. She moved on to assist the Electronic Communications Security Pty Ltd – a division of State Security – in establishing its core business functions to be offered as services to organs of state to secure all electronic communications. Hettie then joined Absa to provide strategic information security direction to the group from a governance, policy and risk management perspective. Following this, she joined Standard Bank as head of Information Security Risk Assessments, and recently moved to Operational Risk having responsibility for IT Risk and Change Risk.

Some of her biggest achievements to date include the implementation of an identify and access management solution across seven different platforms and integrating legacy applications into the solution. Hettie implemented the first PKI solution in SA, and played a key role in obtaining membership to the international world-wide organisation for incident monitoring.

In her spare time Hettie is a marathon runner and recently completed the Comrades.


Lynette Botha, senior manager information security and compliance, MTN
Lynette Botha is a well-rounded IT professional, with over 16 years of experience in the IT industry. She has worked for a number of multi-national organisations such as Naspers, and in the telco industry for Cell C and MTN. She has spent the past six years at MTN as a senior manager responsible for information security, governance, risk and compliance. Recently she has focused on identifying and implementing large scaled security solutions to combat cybercrime, and ensure legal and regulatory compliance. She’s passionate about IT governance and has successfully led IT governance programmes to completion.

Lynette currently functions as part of the MTN SA IT executive team, where she leads a team of highly skilled individuals with diverse security and compliance portfolios.


Vernon Fryer, chief technology security officer, Vodacom SA
Vernon Fryer is the chief technology security officer at Vodacom, and manages Technology Security and Forensic Investigations. He has been involved in the IT industry since 1971, coming from an IBM background, where he worked as an operation specialist in the financial sector.

During his career in the South African Police Service, he served in the following roles: head of Information Security; head of Cyber Crime for Interpol Southern Africa; and the national head of the Computer Crime Unit. Fryer has also served on the International Computer Crime Work Group. As a member of this workgroup, he travelled extensively as a consultant, specifically in the USA, Europe, China, Africa and the Middle East.

He is the president of the International Information Systems Forensic Association, South African Charter. As a qualified IT forensic analyst, he has obtained various international certifications in information security and audit. Over the past 30 years, he has investigated computer-related fraud, assisted in tracking assets in various liquidations, and has testified in intellectual property disputes. In addition, Fryer is member of good standing and a contributor to the following bodies:

Shamalan Soobiah, technology consultant and former Standard Bank SA CIO
Shamalan Soobiah has worked locally and abroad in the technology arena across multiple industries, assisting clients align business strategy with leading edge technology investments in initiatives that are realisable and deliver value that can be measured. Shamalan has held managing executive positions on both the supplier and client sides of the delivery continuum. His most recent roles were managing executive of Accenture's Management Consulting and Integrated Markets division and after that, CIO of Standard Bank's PBB SA division.
