SPEAKER - Jacob Appelbaum
Jacob Appelbaum

Jacob Appelbaum regards Tor as a "part of an ecosystem of software that helps people regain and reclaim their autonomy. It helps to enable people to have agency of all kinds; it helps others to help each other and it helps you to help yourself. It runs, it is open and it is supported by a large community spread across all walks of life."

He is known for representing Wikileaks at the 2010 Hope Conference. He has subsequently been targeted by US law enforcement agencies, which obtained a court order for his Twitter account, detained him several times at US borders after trips abroad, and have previously seized his laptop and several mobile phones. He has been an active member of the Cult of the Dead Cow hacker collective since 2008, and is the co-founder of the San Francisco hackerspace Noisebridge.

He has worked for Greenpeace, and has volunteered for the Ruckus Society, a non-profit organisation that sponsors skill-sharing and non-violent direct action training, strategy and consultation for activists and organisers from frontline and impacted communities working on social justice, human rights, migrant rights, workers' rights and environmental justice. He is also an ambassador for the art group, monochrom, an international art/technology/philosophy group.

Appelbaum has collaborated on several high-profile research projects. He was a driving force in the team behind the creation of the Cold Boot Attacks, winning both the Pwnie for Most Innovative Research award, and the Usenix Security best student paper award in 2008. Additionally, he was part of the MD5 Collisions team that created a rogue CA certificate by using a cluster of 200 PlayStations funded by the Swiss taxpayers. The "MD5 considered harmful today" research was awarded the best paper award at CRYPTO 2009.

He appeared with Julian Assange on episodes 8 and 9 of "The World Tomorrow", a 2012 TV programme featuring political interviews hosted by Assange.

He is a contributor to Assange's 2012 book, Cyberpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet
